What is an ideal buyer persona?
An ideal buyer persona is a description of the person who buys or influences the purchase: their role, goals and concerns. Gartner describes personas as archetypal representations of customer groups who share goals, needs, expectations, behaviors and motivations. Where an ideal customer profile describes the right company, the persona describes the people inside it who decide.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
In commercial services, the buyer is rarely one person: a facility manager cares about uptime and fewer complaints, a property manager about tenant satisfaction and budget, and a compliance lead about passing the next audit. Sellers who speak to each concern give every person a reason to support the purchase. Personas began as a software design tool: Alan Cooper popularized them in his 1999 book The Inmates Are Running the Asylum, and marketers later applied the idea to buyers. A persona built from interviews with real buyers is worth far more than one written in a workshop.
Example
Fictitious numbersA fire protection company interviews 20 recent hospital buyers and finds that renewals are often decided by accreditation and compliance leaders, while its sellers had been meeting only facility directors. It adds the compliance lead to its persona set and starts inviting that person to annual reviews.
