What is an ideal customer profile (ICP)?
An ideal customer profile (ICP) is a description of the companies that get the most value from your offer and that you win and keep most often. It describes organizations, using traits like industry, size, location, building type or compliance burden. A buyer persona describes the people inside those organizations. Both matter, and they answer different questions.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
An ICP decides where sellers spend their week. Without one, the pipeline fills with deals that look large and rarely close, or close and leave at the first renewal. Forrester argues that a shared ICP aligns marketing, sales, product and customer teams on the same best-fit accounts. Gartner adds that B2B companies need to profile the best-fit organization, since individual buyer personas alone are not enough to guide strategy. In a buy-and-build platform, acquired companies often arrive with different ICPs, and reconciling them is early work for the commercial leader.
Example
A fire and life safety company reviews three years of wins and renewals. Its best accounts are multi-site healthcare and education owners with in-house facility teams and strict inspection schedules. Single-site retail wins often but rarely renews. The ICP becomes multi-site, code-heavy owners, and prospecting time follows.
"Which of our current accounts would we choose again, and what do they have in common?"
