What is an economic buyer?

The economic buyer is the person with final authority to approve the spend. That person can say yes when others say no, and can veto a choice the evaluation team supports. It is the E in MEDDIC, the qualification method that came out of PTC's sales organization in the 1990s, which describes it as the person with final authority to fund the contract. Titles vary: at a single facility it may be a regional director; on a large project, a CFO or a board.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

A deal without access to the economic buyer has a ceiling on its certainty. The economic buyer weighs your proposal against every other use of the money, often outside the evaluation the seller sees. For a revenue leader, whether a seller has met the economic buyer says a great deal about how firm a large deal is. It is also one of the clearest moments for a senior leader to step into a deal, peer to peer.

Example

A utility services contractor has spent three months with a municipal water utility's operations manager on a valve maintenance program. The proposal is approved at that level. The program exceeds the general manager's signing limit and needs board approval, and nobody from the contractor has met the general manager or presented to the board.

The question to ask

"Who signs off on this spend, and when did we last speak with them directly?"
