What is founder-led sales?
Founder-led sales is the stage when the founder sells personally, before handing selling to a team. In early markets the founder is often the only person who can explain why the product matters, adjust it from customer feedback and close on the vision. Investors such as Martin Casado of Andreessen Horowitz advise against hiring a VP of Sales before reps sell consistently.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Founder-led sales produces the evidence a sales team will inherit: who buys, why, and at what price. The handoff is where many early companies stall, because the founder's wins rely on credibility a new seller lacks. A revenue leader joining after this stage should study the founder's deals closely and find which parts of the motion someone else can repeat.
Example
A founder closes the first 12 customers personally. The first two account executives struggle until they learn the founder's discovery questions and the three use cases that won. Within two quarters they close deals without the founder present, and the company starts writing a sales playbook from what worked.
