What is product-market fit?

Product-market fit is the point where a product meets a strong market need and customers start pulling it from you. Marc Andreessen popularized the term in a June 2007 essay, describing it as being in a good market with a product that can satisfy that market. He credited the underlying idea to investor Andy Rachleff, to whom the term itself is commonly attributed.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Product-market fit is the precondition for scaling sales. Before it, adding sellers multiplies cost faster than wins, because each deal still depends on the founder's persuasion. A revenue leader hired before fit risks being blamed for a product problem, so the first job is to separate deals lost on execution from deals lost because the market does not want the product yet.

Example

A company has 20 customers, but most came through the founder's network and no two deals closed for the same reason. A new sales leader finds that the 6 customers in one segment renew and expand with little effort. That segment shows signs of fit, and the rest of the base does not yet.

The question to ask

"Which customer segment renews and refers without being pushed?"
