What is a sales playbook?

A sales playbook is the written guide to how a team sells: who to target, what to say and what good looks like at each stage. It captures what the best sellers do so the rest of the team can repeat it. Forrester names three common elements of a playbook: actions, messaging and resources.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

A playbook turns individual skill into a team standard. Without one, each seller sells their own way, coaching has no shared reference, and new hires learn by trial and error on live accounts. Bain partners writing in HBR describe high-performing B2B teams using sales plays, which they define as coordinated sets of actions to create and win an opportunity at a specific customer. In a buy-and-build platform, a common playbook is how acquired branches start selling the same way without losing what made them good.

Example

A testing and inspection company notices its top two sellers win more renewals because they review last year's deficiencies with the customer before quoting. The playbook writes that habit down, with the report they bring and the questions they ask, and every seller uses it at renewal time.

The question to ask

"If our best seller left tomorrow, which of their habits are written down anywhere?"
