What is Solution Selling?
Solution Selling is selling by diagnosing the buyer's pain and helping them picture a solution before discussing the product. Problem-led selling had earlier roots, but Michael Bosworth codified and popularized the method after founding his Solution Selling training firm in 1983. The methodology is now part of Richardson Sales Performance, formed when Richardson merged with Sales Performance International in 2019. The core shift was moving the conversation from product features to the buyer's problem and what it costs them.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Much of modern discovery practice descends from this idea. For a revenue leader, the value is consistency. When reps diagnose before they prescribe, proposals match real problems and pipeline stages mean the same thing across the team. The limit is that buyers now often define their own solutions before they talk to a seller, which pushed later methods toward bringing insight earlier in the sale.
Example
A facility services company's reps used to open every first meeting with a capabilities deck. After adopting a solution selling approach, they start by asking how the buyer handles after-hours emergencies and what each slow response costs in tenant complaints. Proposals now describe the buyer's problem first and the service scope second, and the buyer can see their own situation in the document.
"Do our proposals open with the buyer's problem and its cost, or with our list of services?"
