What is insight selling?

Insight selling is leading with a fresh point of view on the buyer's business to create demand. The seller brings an idea about what the buyer should do differently, often before the buyer has defined a need. A 2012 Harvard Business Review article by Brent Adamson, Matthew Dixon and Nicholas Toman described top performers moving from selling solutions to selling insights, targeting organizations where demand was still emerging.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Buyers can now define their own solutions and run price-driven comparisons, which leaves little room for a seller who arrives after the specification is written. Insight selling is how a team gets in earlier. In commercial services, code changes, insurer requirements and regulatory deadlines are ready sources of insight, provided someone turns them into a clear point of view for each customer segment and reps carry it into the market.

Example

An environmental compliance firm notices that a new stormwater rule will require additional sampling at many warehouse sites next year. Its reps contact logistics operators with a short brief on what the rule means for their sites and when it takes effect. Several operators ask for assessments months before they would have issued a bid, and the firm helps shape the scope.

The question to ask

"What change in our customers' world do we understand before they do, and are our reps using it?"
