What is a single source of truth?

A single source of truth is one agreed place where each type of data lives, so every report, forecast and board deck starts from the same numbers. In systems design, each data element is mastered, or edited, in only one place. For a revenue team, that usually means the CRM owns pipeline and customer records, and the ERP or billing system owns invoiced revenue.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Without one, meetings start with a reconciliation. Sales brings a CRM number, finance brings an ERP number, a branch brings a spreadsheet, and the hour goes to arguing about which is right. In a buy-and-build platform, each add-on arrives with its own systems, so deciding which system owns customers, agreements and bookings is an early integration decision. The goal is clear ownership for each type of data; one giant database is optional.

Example

Fictitious numbers

A platform company with three acquired fire protection businesses reports monthly bookings to its sponsor. In March, the CRM shows $2.4 million in bookings, the ERP shows $2.1 million invoiced and one branch's spreadsheet holds $250,000 of signed work that appears in neither. The team agrees that bookings live in the CRM and invoiced revenue lives in the ERP, and moves the branch's signed work into the CRM.

The question to ask

"For each number in our monthly sponsor report, which system owns it and who is allowed to change it?"
