What is revenue operations (RevOps)?

Revenue operations (RevOps) is the team that runs the systems, data and processes behind marketing, sales and customer success, so all three work from one set of numbers. It usually owns the CRM, stage definitions, reporting, territory and quota mechanics, and the handoffs between teams. Gartner describes it as a function that aligns sales, marketing and customer success to drive revenue growth. Sales operations is the older, sales-only version.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

RevOps decides whether your forecast is a calculation or a debate. When nobody owns stage definitions, close dates and renewal records, every branch reports its own version of the truth and the leadership meeting turns into a reconciliation exercise. In a PE-backed services platform, RevOps is often one of the first commercial hires after an add-on, because combining two CRMs and two price books is where integration value tends to leak. A strong RevOps lead gives the CRO time back for coaching and deals.

Example

Fictitious numbers

A fire protection platform with 22 sellers across four branches buys a fifth company. Each branch defines a "won" agreement differently, so reported bookings for the quarter range from $3.1 million to $3.6 million depending on who runs the report. The RevOps lead sets one definition and maps the acquired company's records into the shared CRM, and the board sees a single bookings figure of $3.3 million.

The question to ask

"Who owns the definitions behind our pipeline and bookings numbers, and would two people running the same report get the same answer?"
