What is a sales stage?

A sales stage is a step a deal moves through on the way to a decision, such as discovery, proposal or negotiation. Stages give every opportunity a shared address in the CRM. IBM lists a typical sequence running from prospecting and qualification through proposal, negotiation and close. In most CRM systems, the stage also drives a default probability and the pipeline report.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Stages are the common language of the pipeline review. When each manager defines them differently, pipeline totals by stage mean little, and the forecast inherits the confusion. Stages work best when they describe what the buyer has done. A deal sits in proposal because the buyer asked for pricing and agreed to review it. A quote emailed without that agreement moves nothing. CRM platforms can enforce this: Microsoft's business process flows let an admin require data before a record moves to the next stage.

Example

A testing and inspection company runs two branches. One branch moves a deal to proposal the moment a quote is emailed. The other waits until the facility manager has walked the site and asked for pricing. The regional report adds both together, so the proposal stage looks fuller than it is and its conversion rate describes neither branch.

The question to ask

"Would two of our managers put the same deal in the same stage?"
