What is sales enablement?
Sales enablement is equipping sellers with the training, content and tools they need to sell well at each stage of the sale. It covers onboarding, ongoing skills training, sales content such as proposals and case studies, and the tools sellers use every day. Gartner's guidance centers on naming the behaviors sellers should model and showing real examples of those behaviors for every play and stage.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Enablement is how a playbook turns into changed behavior in the field. Content nobody opens and training nobody applies are common, so the test is whether sellers sell differently afterward. Gartner frames enablement as a driver of seller motivation and productivity. How onboarding is run matters too: research by Phillip Wiseman, Michael Ahearne and colleagues found that new salespeople trained in the field by their managers outsold peers who went through a centralized program. In services companies, enablement also has to cover technical knowledge: code requirements, inspection standards and how to walk a customer through a deficiency report.
Example
A security services company launches a monitoring upgrade tied to a code change. Enablement gives sellers a one-page explanation of the code change, a sample proposal, and recordings of two top sellers presenting the upgrade to customers. A quarter later, attach rates on renewals show which sellers picked it up and who needs help.
"What did our sellers do differently after our last training, and how do we know?"
