What is pipeline generation?
Pipeline generation is the creation of new qualified opportunities in a period, from every source: marketing, sellers' own prospecting, partners, field technicians and existing customers. It is measured as the count and value of opportunities created, split by source and segment. Forrester's B2B Revenue Waterfall makes the opportunity, the unit sales leaders care about, the thing every team counts.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Today's pipeline generation is next quarter's revenue. A revenue leader who watches only the forecast sees a shortfall too late to fix it. In commercial services, much new pipeline comes from sites you already serve: inspections that surface repairs, renewals that open added scope, and facility managers who move to new buildings. Count those sources separately so you know which engine is slowing.
How to calculate it
Pipeline generated = value of new qualified opportunities created in the period, by source. Compare it with the pipeline your plan needs, given win rate and cycle length.
Common mistake: counting opportunities when they are created instead of when they are qualified, which rewards volume over substance.
Example
Fictitious numbersA mechanical services company needs $9M of new pipeline per quarter to support its plan. In Q2 it creates $7.2M: $3.6M from sellers, $2.7M from technician leads and $0.9M from marketing. The $1.8M gap will show up in Q3 bookings unless prospecting or technician referrals rise.
