What is pipeline coverage?
Pipeline coverage is open pipeline for a period divided by the quota still to be closed, showing whether enough is in play to hit the number. A team with $3M of open pipeline against $1M of remaining quota has 3x coverage. The ratio only means something when the pipeline is qualified and dated inside the period.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Coverage is one of the earliest warnings a revenue leader gets. If coverage is short in week two, late-quarter effort rarely closes the gap. The right ratio depends on your own win rate: a team that wins one deal in four needs far more coverage than a team that wins one in two. Forrester has listed the 3x rule of thumb among popular sales myths, which is a good reason to set your target from your own history.
How to calculate it
Pipeline coverage = open qualified pipeline with close dates in the period ÷ (quota minus closed-won to date). As a cross-check, the coverage you need is roughly 1 ÷ your win rate by value.
Common mistake: counting deals dated in later periods, or stale deals nobody is working, which inflates the ratio.
Example
Fictitious numbersAn environmental services company has a $2.4M quarterly new-business quota and has closed $0.6M by week four. Remaining quota is $1.8M. Open qualified pipeline dated this quarter is $4.5M, so coverage is 2.5x. With a historical win rate of 30% by value, the team needs about 3.3x, so it is short roughly $1.5M of pipeline.
"Is our coverage target based on our own win rate, or on a rule of thumb?"
