What is an AI SDR?
An AI SDR is software that researches prospects and drafts or sends outreach, work once done by junior sellers in a sales development role. Typical tools build lists, write first-touch emails or messages, answer early replies and book meetings for a human seller. Some draft for review; others send on their own within limits someone sets.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
An AI SDR can raise outreach volume without new headcount. The leader still owns who gets contacted, what the message promises and whether the meetings it books turn into pipeline. The law treats software outreach like any other. The FTC's CAN-SPAM guide says the rules make no exception for business-to-business email and that a company cannot contract away its responsibility when someone else sends for it. The FCC has also ruled that AI-generated voices count as "artificial" under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. In commercial services, where a handful of facility managers make up a territory, careless volume can burn the accounts your sellers need for the next renewal cycle.
Example
Fictitious numbersA mechanical services company pilots an AI SDR on 400 property managers outside its current branches. It books 22 meetings in a quarter. Sellers rate 9 of them as real opportunities, so the leader compares that yield and cost with a human SDR before expanding the pilot.
"Who on our team reviews what our AI SDR sends, and who answers for it when a prospect complains?"
