What is pipeline?

Pipeline is all open sales opportunities, with their stage, value and expected close date. It is the list of deals a team believes it can still win this period and beyond. IBM describes it as a visual view of where each prospect stands in the sales cycle. It changes every day as deals enter, advance, close or die.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Pipeline is the raw material for every number a revenue leader commits to. If it is thin, the quarter is in trouble before it starts. If it is padded with old or unqualified deals, the forecast built on it is fiction. In a PE-backed services company, the sponsor reads pipeline as an early view of next year's revenue, so its quality matters as much as its size. Repair quotes, new service agreements and project bids often sit in one list, and they behave very differently.

Example

Fictitious numbers

A fire protection company with 14 sellers shows $6.2M of open pipeline. On review, $1.4M sits on deals with close dates already past and no buyer activity in 60 days. The working pipeline is $4.8M, and the plan for next quarter changes once that gap is visible.

The question to ask

"How much of our open pipeline has a dated next step the buyer agreed to?"
