What is an integration management office (IMO)?

An integration management office (IMO) is the team that runs the integration of acquired companies, coordinating plans, owners, timelines and issues across functions. It typically sits between a steering committee and the functional teams, tracks decisions and surfaces conflicts early. Some companies set up a commercial IMO focused on sales, marketing and customers, because revenue goals tend to be harder to reach than cost goals.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Mergers lose revenue through neglect. McKinsey research found that more than a third of companies fail to reach their revenue goals after a merger. The sales stream of an IMO decides who owns overlapping accounts, how pricing and pay plans converge and how customers hear about the deal. A CRO who leads that stream protects renewals during the months when sellers are most distracted.

Example

Fictitious numbers

A facility services platform closes two add-ons in one quarter. The IMO tracks 60 integration decisions; the sales stream owns 12 of them, including ownership of 300 shared customers and the date each team moves into the platform's CRM.

The question to ask

"Does every customer-facing integration decision have a named owner, and is anyone tracking renewals at the acquired companies?"
