What is CRM hygiene?
CRM hygiene is how complete, current and accurate the data in the CRM is, which decides whether reports and forecasts built on it can be trusted. Typical problems are missing close dates, stale stages, duplicate accounts, contacts who left the company and deals with no activity in months. IBM's description of data quality covers the same idea through dimensions such as completeness, accuracy, timeliness, consistency and uniqueness.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Poor hygiene is a common reason a forecast misses without warning. A deal with a close date three months in the past still counts in pipeline coverage, so the coverage ratio looks healthy while the real pipeline is thin. Hygiene is a management habit more than a RevOps project: it improves when managers inspect the record in every deal conversation and slips when they accept verbal updates. For a PE-backed company, clean CRM data also helps at exit, because buyers often test pipeline claims against the records.
Example
Fictitious numbersAn environmental services company with 12 sellers reports $4.0 million in open pipeline. A review finds $900,000 sitting in deals with close dates already past and another $300,000 in duplicate records. The pipeline the team can count on is $2.8 million, and coverage against a $1.4 million quarterly target drops from about 2.9x to 2.0x.
"What share of our open pipeline has a close date in the past or no customer activity in the last 30 days?"
