What is human on the loop?
Human on the loop is a design where AI acts on its own while a person monitors and can step in, instead of approving each action. An expert group set up by the European Commission described the difference in its 2019 ethics guidelines. In the loop, a person can intervene in every decision cycle. On the loop, a person shapes the design and monitors the system as it runs.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Human on the loop is how AI work scales past the approval queue. If a manager must approve every CRM update an agent makes, the agent saves little time. The trade is that errors can reach records or customers before anyone sees them, so the monitoring has to be real and someone must be able to pause the agent. For high-risk systems, the EU AI Act requires a design that lets the people overseeing the system override its output or stop it, and it names automation bias, the habit of trusting AI output too readily, as a tendency they must stay aware of.
Example
Fictitious numbersA PE-backed facility services company lets an AI agent send confirmations for 600 scheduled maintenance visits a month without approval. The service manager reviews a daily exception report and reads a sample of 30 messages each week. When a template change puts wrong dates in one branch's messages, the manager pauses the agent for that branch the same morning.
"For the AI work that runs without approval, who is watching it, and how fast can they stop it?"
