What is human in the loop?
Human in the loop is a design where a person reviews, approves or can override AI work before it takes effect. IBM describes it as a setup where a human actively participates in the operation, supervision or decision-making of an automated system. For high-risk AI systems, Article 14 of the EU AI Act requires that overseers can override the output and stop the system.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Human in the loop is how accountability survives automation. When an AI drafts a customer email, adjusts a forecast or updates a deal stage, someone still owns the result, and the approval point is where that ownership lives. The design choice is where to place people: too many approvals and the AI saves no time, too few and errors reach customers. OpenAI's agent guidance suggests keeping human oversight on sensitive, irreversible or high-stakes actions until confidence in the system grows.
Example
Fictitious numbersA mechanical services company lets an AI agent update next steps and close dates in the CRM after each customer meeting. Changes to deal amount or forecast category go to the seller's manager for approval first. Over a quarter, managers reject about one in ten proposed changes, which shows the team where the agent still needs work.
"For each AI tool that changes our data or contacts customers, where exactly does a person approve the work?"
