What is agent observability?

Agent observability is recording what an AI agent did, why and with what data, so people can check its work, find errors and correct them. It captures each step: the request, the data retrieved, the tools used, the decisions made and the output. Engineers call these records traces, logs and metrics. The OpenTelemetry project, an open standard for software monitoring, is defining common conventions for AI agent telemetry.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

When an agent changes a forecast category, sends a renewal reminder or drafts a quote, the revenue leader still owns the result. Without a record of what the agent saw and did, a wrong number cannot be traced to its cause. NIST's AI Risk Management Framework expects AI systems to be monitored once they are in production. Observability turns an agent from a black box into a colleague whose work can be reviewed.

A CRO at a PE-backed mechanical services company sees the renewal forecast drop by $400,000 overnight. The agent's trace shows it read a cancelled-agreement flag that a branch had entered by mistake. The branch fixes the record, the forecast recovers, and the CRO explains the swing to the operating partner the same day.
