What is a deal desk?

A deal desk is a team or process that approves non-standard pricing and terms before a deal is quoted. Salesforce describes it as a cross-functional team that handles approvals and compliance on complex and non-standard deals, working with finance and legal. It usually grows as the volume of complex deals grows.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Every discount and special term sets margin for the life of the agreement. Without a deal desk, those decisions are made one seller at a time, and the pattern only shows up later in the gross margin report. A good deal desk speeds approvals as well as protecting price, since sellers spend less time chasing sign-offs. For a PE-backed services platform, it is often the first place pricing discipline across acquired branches becomes visible to the sponsor.

Example

A facility services platform finds that each acquired branch approves discounts differently, and its largest multi-year agreements carry the deepest cuts. It sets up a small deal desk to review non-standard pricing and terms on large agreements. Average discount on those agreements falls over the next two quarters, and sellers get answers faster than they did through branch managers.

The question to ask

"Who approved the largest discounts we gave last quarter, and what did we get in return?"
