What is a system of action?
A system of action is software that reads data from systems of record and recommends or takes the next action, turning information into decisions and tasks. A system of record stores what happened. A system of action reads that record, decides what needs attention and prompts a person or does the task itself. Investors use the newer, loosely defined term for AI that automates work on top of existing systems.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Most revenue teams have plenty of data and too few clear next moves. A CRM can show 300 open opportunities; it cannot tell a sales manager which five need attention this week. A system of action promises to close that gap. The revenue leader's test is whether the suggested action matches what a good manager would have decided, and who is accountable when the software acts on its own.
Example
A testing and inspection company with 12 sellers keeps inspection results in one system and service agreements in the CRM. A system of action reads both, sees that three sites with failed inspections have no repair quote after 10 days, and creates a task for each account owner with the deficiency list attached. The sales manager sees the open tasks and follows up with the owners.
"Which decisions on our team still depend on someone remembering to look at a report?"
