What is stage history?

Stage history is the record of when each deal entered and left each pipeline stage, which shows how deals move in practice. Most CRMs keep it automatically in the background. Salesforce, for example, has a dedicated object that represents the stage history of an opportunity. From stage history you can see time spent in each stage, stages that were skipped and deals that moved backward.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

A pipeline snapshot shows where deals sit today; stage history shows how they got there. It is the raw material for honest conversion rates, sales cycle length and slippage analysis, and it exposes patterns a snapshot hides, such as deals that jump from discovery straight to commit or sit in proposal for months. For a sponsor or a buyer in diligence, stage history is how claims about pipeline quality get tested. Leaders who read it spend less time arguing about anecdotes.

Example

Fictitious numbers

A mechanical contractor reviews stage history for 90 closed deals from last year. Won deals spent a median of 18 days in the proposal stage, while lost deals spent a median of 47 days there. The gap shows the leadership team where lost deals tend to stall.

The question to ask

"How long do our won deals spend in each stage compared with our lost deals?"
