What is signal-based selling?

Signal-based selling is prioritizing accounts and timing outreach based on signals of change, such as funding, hiring, a new executive or a new site. The idea is old: sellers have long chased trigger events. What changed is scale. Software now watches thousands of accounts for public filings, job posts, news and web activity, and tells sellers which ones moved this week.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Change opens budgets and resets vendor relationships: a new facilities director, an acquisition or a new building often puts the incumbent contract up for review. Many signals are public, and listed companies must report major corporate events on Form 8-K, generally within four business days. Signals are inferences, so one alone can be noise; analysts advise looking for sustained interest and several people from the same organization before acting. For a leader, the value is focus: sellers spend their week on accounts with a reason to talk now, which matters most when territories are small and every facility manager counts.

Example

Fictitious numbers

A janitorial and facility services company tracks 600 target buildings in two metros. In one month, 14 change owners or property managers. Sellers reach those 14 first, and 5 agree to a site walk before the new owners set next year's budget.

The question to ask

"Which accounts in our territory changed something important this month, and has anyone reached out?"
