What is a sales tech stack?
A sales tech stack is the set of software tools a sales team uses, from the CRM to prospecting, quoting, forecasting and AI tools, and how they connect. The CRM is usually the base layer, with other tools reading from and writing to it. Forrester has written about how the growing number of sales tools can overwhelm sellers and pull their time away from buyers.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Every tool promises time back, and every tool also asks sellers to log in, learn it and enter data. A stack that grows one purchase at a time ends up with overlapping tools, data that disagrees and licenses nobody uses. For a PE-backed company, the stack is also a cost and integration question at every add-on, since acquired teams bring their own tools. The useful test for each tool is whether it changes a decision or a behavior you can point to.
Example
Fictitious numbersA commercial HVAC services company with 25 sellers runs nine sales tools costing $210,000 a year. Login data shows three tools used by fewer than five sellers each, and two others duplicate features the CRM already has. Retiring those five saves $85,000 a year and gives sellers fewer places to enter the same information.
"Which tools in our stack change a decision or a behavior we can measure, and which ones only add data entry?"
