What is sales-led growth?
Sales-led growth is a strategy where sellers drive acquisition through direct conversations. The buyer speaks with a salesperson before using the product or receiving the service, and the sales team guides the purchase from first meeting to signed agreement. Harrison Rose, a go-to-market expert at the venture firm Notion Capital, defines a sales-led company as one where the customer talks to sales before experiencing the product.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Sales-led growth fits complex, high-value purchases with several decision makers, which describes much commercial services work. Its main cost is people. Every seller, manager and support role sits inside the cost of each new customer, so the revenue leader has to know what a seller costs and what a seller produces. Andreessen Horowitz partners note that even software companies that grew bottom-up usually add top-down sales to win enterprise-wide deals. The leader's job is to make the sales engine predictable enough that the CFO and the sponsor can plan on it.
Example
Fictitious numbersA fire and life safety company with 18 sellers wins nearly all its agreements through site walks and proposals. Each fully ramped seller costs about $150,000 a year, fully loaded, and signs about $600,000 in new annual agreement value. The CRO and CFO track that ratio every quarter, by branch, before approving new seller hires.
"What does one fully ramped seller cost us, and how much new agreement value do they produce in a year?"
