What is sales coaching?

Sales coaching is helping a seller improve a specific skill or deal through observation, questions and practice, separate from reviewing their numbers. It works on how the seller sells: how they run a site walk, frame a proposal or handle a price objection. A numbers review asks what happened. Coaching asks why, and works on the next attempt. It is usually one manager, one seller and one skill at a time.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Apart from hiring, coaching is the main tool a front-line manager has to change results. Matthew Dixon and Brent Adamson, drawing on Sales Executive Council research, reported that no other productivity investment came close to coaching for improving seller performance. In practice, forecasting squeezes coaching out. When the quarter is tight, managers review numbers and call it coaching. Sellers notice, and skills stay flat.

Example

A security integration company's seller keeps losing bids at the final price discussion. The manager joins two customer meetings, then spends time with the seller on how the price was framed and practices a different opening. On the next bid, the seller presents the price against the cost of a failed inspection, and the buyer's questions move from price to schedule.

The question to ask

"In the last month, how many hours did our managers spend coaching a specific skill, and how many reviewing numbers?"
