What is a platform company?

A platform company is the first company a private equity firm buys in a sector, chosen as the base for adding other companies through acquisitions. Buyers look for capable management, a strong position in a niche and systems that can absorb more companies. Smaller add-ons are then bought and combined with it, so the platform's people, processes and systems become the standard for the larger group.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

If you lead sales at a platform, you are building the sales model for companies the owner has not bought yet. Every add-on will be measured against your definitions of pipeline, stages, renewals and quota. A platform with a clear commercial system integrates add-ons faster and shows the sponsor which acquired teams perform. A platform without one multiplies its own confusion with each deal.

Example

Fictitious numbers

A sponsor buys a fire protection company with 14 sellers and $40M in revenue as its platform. Over three years it adds four regional inspection firms. The platform's renewal process and CRM stages become the standard each add-on adopts within its first two quarters.

The question to ask

"Is our sales system written down clearly enough that an acquired team could adopt it in one quarter?"
