What is an operating partner?

An operating partner is a private equity professional, often a former executive or functional expert, who helps portfolio companies improve operations and results. Some are full-time staff; others advise part-time or sit on boards. In a survey of PE investors, operating partners helped identify sources of value in 45 percent of deals before the investment and 51 percent after it.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

The operating partner is often the person who reads a CRO's numbers most closely between board meetings. Many have run sales or operations themselves, so they look past the forecast to the evidence under it: pipeline quality, win rates, renewal risk and manager habits. Treat them as a peer with pattern recognition across many companies. Early candor builds the trust that buys room when a quarter goes wrong.

Example

An operating partner with a commercial background joins the monthly review at a newly acquired testing and inspection company. The first questions are how quotes move from issued to won and how many renewals fall due in the next 90 days. The partner then offers what worked at two similar portfolio companies.

The question to ask

"What does our operating partner look at first, and am I showing it before they ask?"
