What is a portfolio company?

A portfolio company is a company owned fully or in part by a private equity or venture capital fund. In private equity, the fund usually holds a controlling stake and works with management to raise the company's value before selling it. Holds commonly run about five to seven years and end in a sale to a strategic buyer, another fund or a public listing.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Working at a portco changes the pace of a revenue leader's job. The owner wants monthly visibility, a forecast it can rely on and progress against a value creation plan with a fixed end date. Decisions that take a year at a family-owned firm get made in a quarter. Leaders often hold equity too, so a strong exit pays them as well as the fund.

Example

A family-owned elevator service company sells a majority stake to a PE fund. The founder stays as CEO, a new CFO arrives within months, and the sales leader now reports pipeline, renewals and price increases to the board every month instead of once a year.

The question to ask

"What does our owner expect the commercial numbers to look like at exit, and do we track those numbers today?"
