What is a mission statement?

A mission statement is a short statement of what a company does, for whom and why. It usually runs one or two sentences. A mission describes the present purpose of the business, while a vision describes the future state it wants to reach. In practice the two often blur, and many published vision statements read like missions.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

A mission gives a revenue leader a filter for what the team sells and to whom. In commercial services, a mission built around keeping customers' buildings safe and compliant points sellers toward recurring inspection and maintenance work and away from one-off jobs the operation struggles to deliver. When a platform adds acquired companies, a shared mission helps align the teams while systems and pay plans are still being merged.

Example

An environmental services company's mission is to help industrial sites stay compliant with waste and water rules. A seller is offered a large demolition cleanup that falls outside the company's permits and crews. The mission makes the decision quick. The team refers the work to a partner and keeps the relationship for the recurring compliance work it does well.

The question to ask

"Does our mission statement help a seller decide which work to walk away from?"
