What is land and expand?
Land and expand is winning a small first deal, then growing the account over time. The first deal lowers the buyer's risk, and delivering well earns the right to sell more. Writing for Andreessen Horowitz, Steven Sinofsky describes the path from pilot to implementation to expansion, and notes that there is almost always more revenue in customers already paying you.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
In commercial services, land and expand usually means starting with one site, one inspection type or one region of a multi-site customer, then growing across the portfolio. It works only if the first job is delivered well, so the revenue leader depends on operations as much as on sales. TSIA's Land, Adopt, Expand, Renew model makes the same point: adoption sits between the land and the expansion. A land with no expansion plan behind it is just a small deal, and small deals that never grow drag down seller productivity.
Example
Fictitious numbersA janitorial and facility services company wins a three-building pilot worth $180,000 a year with a regional property manager that owns 40 buildings. After a year of clean quality audits and a review with the owner's operations lead, it adds 12 more buildings, taking annual agreement value to $900,000. The remaining 25 buildings become the next year's target.
"For each customer we landed this year, what is the next expansion, and who owns it?"
