What is expansion revenue?

Expansion revenue is new revenue from existing customers through more users, more sites, more services or a higher tier of service. Gartner calls the underlying capability account growth: a supplier's ability to increase its share of wallet with a customer it already serves. In a services company, adding buildings to an agreement, adding a second service line or moving a customer to more frequent visits all count.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Forrester data shows that existing customers, through renewal and expansion, account for 61% of B2B revenue. Expansion is usually cheaper to win than a new logo, because trust, site access and a buying relationship are already in place. TSIA's Land, Adopt, Expand, Renew model treats expansion as its own stage with its own measures. For a PE-backed services platform, growth across the acquired customer bases is often a central line in the investment case, so the revenue leader needs expansion reported separately from new business and from renewals, or nobody can tell which engine is working.

How to calculate it

Add up the recurring value existing customers added in the period through upsells, cross-sells and added sites, measured against what each customer paid at the start of the period. Report one-time project work on its own line.

Common mistake: netting expansion against lost and reduced agreements, which hides both numbers.

Example

Fictitious numbers

An environmental services company starts the year with $10 million in recurring agreement revenue. During the year, existing customers add $900,000 in new sites and service lines, while $600,000 is lost to non-renewals. Expansion revenue is $900,000. Reporting only the net gain of $300,000 would hide a retention problem.

The question to ask

"How much of this year's growth came from customers we already had, and which branches produced it?"
