What is grounding?
Grounding is tying an AI's answer to specific sources or data, so each claim can be traced and checked. A grounded answer about a deal points to the CRM fields, emails or documents it relied on. Google Cloud's documentation describes grounding as connecting model output to verifiable data sources to reduce hallucinations, and Anthropic's citations feature returns the exact passages that support each claim.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Grounding is what makes AI output usable in a management conversation. A manager can challenge a seller's deal summary by asking for evidence; a grounded AI answer arrives with its evidence attached. Ungrounded answers force someone to re-check everything, which erases the time saved. For anything that reaches a board, a sponsor or a customer, grounding should be a requirement of the tool, and spot-checking the cited sources should be a habit of the team.
Example
Fictitious numbersAn operating partner asks an AI tool to summarize the risk in a portfolio company's ten largest open deals. One answer says three deals look at risk and gives no support. A grounded answer names the three deals, cites the missed next steps and stale close dates in the CRM and links each claim to its record, so the CRO can confirm it in minutes.
"Can our AI tools show the exact record or passage behind each claim they make?"
