What is MEDDIC (and MEDDPICC)?

MEDDIC is a qualification method that tests a deal on six elements: Metrics, Economic buyer, Decision criteria, Decision process, Identify pain and Champion. It took shape at PTC in 1996. Dick Dunkel is credited with creating it, and Jack Napoli is often named alongside him as a co-creator. Each letter is a question about the buyer's world, answered with evidence from the account. MEDDPICC extends it with two letters. Paper process covers every step between the buyer's decision and a signed contract. Competition covers any alternative that could take the deal, including another vendor, an internal team or doing nothing.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

MEDDIC gives a sales team one shared vocabulary for what a real opportunity looks like. That turns pipeline review from opinion into evidence. A deal with no named economic buyer or no champion is visibly thin, whatever the rep's confidence. The two added letters cover places where late-stage deals often stall. A verbal yes means little if legal review, insurance certificates, vendor setup and purchase order approval have not been mapped, and in commercial services the strongest competitor is often the incumbent provider or the customer's own maintenance staff. For a PE-backed services company rolling up branches with different sales habits, a common qualification language is one of the fastest ways to make forecasts comparable across the platform.

Example

A fire protection company with 14 sellers is forecasting a multi-site inspection agreement with a property management firm. The rep has clear metrics, fewer failed inspections, and a facilities director who wants the change. In the review, nobody can name who signs agreements above the director's limit or how the owner's procurement team compares vendors. The deal moves out of commit until those gaps close.

The question to ask

"For each deal in commit, which elements are backed by evidence from the buyer, and which are the rep's assumptions?"
