What is deep research?
Deep research is an AI feature that plans a research task, searches many sources over several minutes and writes a report with citations. OpenAI introduced its version in February 2025, describing an agent that analyzes hundreds of online sources, with tasks taking 5 to 30 minutes. Google's Gemini Deep Research turns a prompt into a research plan the user can edit before it starts browsing.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Deep research can compress hours of account research into a first draft, such as a prospect's sites and recent capital projects before a meeting. OpenAI states that it can still get facts wrong and can struggle to tell authoritative information from rumor. That makes it a strong starting point for account plans and territory work. Any claim that goes into a customer conversation or a proposal needs a check against its source first.
Example
Fictitious numbersBefore a first meeting with a regional hospital system, a fire protection seller runs deep research on the prospect. In 12 minutes it returns a six-page report on the system's nine facilities and recent expansion plans, with 40 citations. The seller checks the three facts she plans to raise, finds one out of date and drops it.
"Which facts from AI research reports reached customers last month without anyone checking the source?"
