What is configure, price, quote (CPQ)?

Configure, price, quote (CPQ) is software that helps sellers build accurate quotes from products, prices, discounts and approval rules. The configure step makes sure the parts of an offer fit together, the price step applies list prices and discounts, and the quote step produces the document the customer signs. CPQ usually sits between the CRM and the billing or ERP system, and it matters most for complex, configurable offers.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

CPQ is where pricing policy becomes real. Without it, sellers build quotes in spreadsheets and documents, discounts get approved by email or not at all, and nobody can see price realization until margins slip. For companies with configurable offers, such as multi-site inspection agreements with different service frequencies, CPQ cuts errors and speeds up quotes. It also gives the CRO a record of which discounts were requested, approved and won, which is the evidence needed to tighten pricing.

Example

Fictitious numbers

A testing and inspection company with 20 sellers quotes multi-site agreements in spreadsheets. A review of 50 recent quotes finds 6 with pricing errors and an average discount of 14% against a policy of 8%. After quoting moves into CPQ with approval rules, quote errors fall and the average discount on new agreements drops to 10%.

The question to ask

"Can we see every discount given last quarter, who approved it and whether the deal needed it to close?"
