What is beat and raise?
Beat and raise describes a quarter in which results come in above the analysts' consensus and management raises its guidance for the rest of the fiscal year. The beat compares reported revenue or earnings with consensus. The raise lifts the company's own forecast range. Investors read the pair as evidence of a strong quarter with more ahead, since guidance sets the bar for the quarters to come.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
The beat comes from the quarter the sales team just closed. The raise rests on the pipeline, renewals and backlog the team holds today. A CFO will want the revenue leader to show coverage for the higher number before raising the year. Pulling deals forward to beat this quarter can make the next raise impossible, which is why the strongest CROs protect the back half of the year while chasing the current quarter.
Example
Fictitious numbersA public fire and life safety company guided second-quarter revenue of $410 million, and consensus sat at $412 million. It reports $421 million, a $9 million beat against consensus and $11 million above its own guidance, and raises the midpoint of full-year guidance from $1.64 billion to $1.66 billion. The $20 million raise is larger than the $11 million beat on its own guidance, so management is also signaling about $9 million of extra strength in the second half.
"If we beat this quarter, does the pipeline for the next two quarters support raising the year?"
