What is attainment distribution?
Attainment distribution is how quota attainment spreads across a team, showing whether results come from a broad base of sellers or a few stars. A team average of 95% can hide very different shapes: most sellers clustered near 95%, or two sellers at 180% carrying a group well below 70%. The distribution shows which one you have.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
The shape tells a revenue leader what kind of problem exists. A few stars carrying many misses points to a capacity or coaching problem, and to concentration risk if a star leaves. A team where nearly everyone misses by a similar amount points to the quota or the market. Thomas Steenburgh and Michael Ahearne found that different groups of sellers respond to different pay elements, so the distribution also tests whether the comp plan works across the whole team. WorldatWork and SalesGlobe survey data shows that at many companies a large share of sellers finish below quota, so a spread that sits partly below the line is normal and the shape matters more than the average.
How to calculate it
Line up every seller's attainment for the same period. Report the share at or above 100%, the median, and the gap between the top and bottom quarter of sellers.
Common mistake: including sellers still ramping, which drags the low end and hides the real shape.
Example
Fictitious numbersA mechanical services company has 12 sellers and team attainment of 96%. Three sellers are at 150% or higher and seven are below 80%. The three top sellers hold most of the large national accounts, so the VP checks territory balance before drawing conclusions about the seven.
"If our top two sellers left tomorrow, what would team attainment have been last year?"
