What is agent sprawl?
Agent sprawl is too many AI agents built or bought across a company without shared oversight, standards or ownership. Each team adds agents to solve its own problem until no one can say how many exist or who answers for each one. NIST's AI Risk Management Framework calls for mechanisms to inventory AI systems and for processes to retire them safely, and sprawl erodes both.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
Each agent carries its own access and its own costs. When a seller leaves, agents they built may keep running with their access. In a PE-backed platform that has acquired several companies, each one may bring its own AI tools, and the integration plan should cover agents the way it covers CRMs. A current inventory with a named owner for every agent is the basic control.
Example
Fictitious numbersA PE-backed environmental services platform surveys its four operating companies and finds 23 AI agents in use, including 9 built by individual sellers on personal accounts. Seven of the 23 have write access to the CRM, and no one can name an owner for five of them. The CRO assigns an owner to every agent that stays and retires the ones nobody claims.
