What is a sales hiring scorecard?

A sales hiring scorecard is a structured list of the skills and behaviors a role needs, used to rate every candidate against the same standard. Interviewers ask planned questions tied to those attributes and record ratings on a shared scale. The hiring decision then rests on evidence gathered the same way for every candidate, which makes candidates comparable.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

A sales hire is expensive to get wrong, since a miss costs salary, months of ramp and the accounts the seller touched. Unstructured interviews feel insightful, yet Iris Bohnet notes in HBR that they are among the worst predictors of on-the-job performance. Google's re:Work guidance reports that structured interviews, scored with shared rubrics, predict performance better and reduce differences between demographic groups. For a services company hiring across several branches, a scorecard is also how a revenue leader keeps the hiring bar the same in every market.

Example

A commercial roofing company hires sellers for two new branches. In the first round, each branch manager interviews in their own style, and the two hires bring very different skills to the same job. For the next round, both managers rate candidates against one shared set of attributes, and the hiring discussion turns on evidence the candidates gave.

The question to ask

"Could two of our interviewers explain, with evidence, why they rated the same candidate differently?"
