What is a context window?

A context window is the amount of information, measured in tokens, that an AI model can consider at once, including the instructions, documents and its own reply. Anthropic describes it as the model's working memory, separate from the large body of data the model was trained on. Anything outside the window is invisible to the model for that request, however important it is.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

Bigger windows let a tool read a full contract, a long email thread or a quarter of deal notes in one pass. More is not always better: Anthropic notes that as token count grows, accuracy and recall degrade, which it calls context rot. That makes the choice of what goes into the window as important as its size. When a vendor says its tool knows your whole CRM, ask what it puts in front of the model for each question and what it leaves out.

Example

A CRO asks an AI tool why a large service agreement slipped. The tool loads the opportunity record, six months of emails and every meeting note into the context window, and its answer misses a pricing objection buried in the middle. A second tool retrieves only the messages that mention price, timing and approval, and the objection appears in its first paragraph.

The question to ask

"When our AI tools answer a question about a deal, what information do they load, and what do they leave out?"
