What is computer use?
Computer use is an AI agent operating software the way a person does, by reading the screen, clicking and typing. Anthropic's documentation describes a model that reads screenshots and controls a desktop's mouse and keyboard, and OpenAI describes its computer-using agent working through graphical interfaces in a similar way. It lets AI work in software that has no connector or API.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
If your field service or quoting system lacks a modern connector, computer use is one way for AI to reach it. It can be slow, and it can make mistakes, such as clicking the wrong place. Anthropic recommends running it in a dedicated virtual machine with minimal privileges and asking a person to confirm consequential actions, such as financial transactions. Treat a computer-use agent like a temp with a login, with narrow access and close supervision.
Example
Fictitious numbersA PE-backed HVAC services platform acquires a company whose quoting tool has no API. Until the migration, an AI agent with a read-only login to the old tool copies 120 open quotes a week into the CRM. A coordinator spot-checks 10 of them each Friday, and the agent has no permission to change prices or send anything to customers.
"If an AI agent is logged into one of our systems, what can that login see and change?"
