What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is making content easy for AI assistants and AI search features to find, trust and cite in the answers they give. The goal shifts from ranking a link to being the source an answer quotes. Clear definitions, direct answers near the top of a page, named authors and cited facts all help. The same work is also called generative engine optimization (GEO), a name that comes from a November 2023 research paper by Pranjal Aggarwal and co-authors on how AI search engines pick and summarize sources.
Why it matters to a revenue leader
More buyers now ask an assistant who services cooling towers in their region or what a fire sprinkler inspection should cost, and they read the answer before they visit any website. If your company never shows up in those answers, your sellers start further behind and the pipeline you never saw does not appear in any report. Google's own guidance says no special tricks are needed for its AI features: pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and the same SEO basics apply. Google also asks who made the content, how and why, so first-hand expertise from people who do the work counts.
Example
Fictitious numbersA testing and inspection firm with 18 sellers publishes plain answers to the questions its estimators hear every week, each signed by a named engineer. Over two quarters, new inbound requests start mentioning that an AI assistant suggested the firm. Marketing adds a "how did you hear about us" option for AI assistants so the source can be tracked.
"When a buyer in our territory asks an AI assistant about the service we sell, whose name comes back?"
