What is an agent harness?

An agent harness is the software around an AI model that gives it instructions and tools, carries out its actions, manages its memory and sets limits, including when to stop. The model proposes a step, such as looking up an account in the CRM. The harness runs that step and feeds the result back. Hugging Face's agent glossary cites a common shorthand for this, agent = model + harness. The same glossary separates scaffolding, the instructions, tool descriptions and output checks that shape the model's behavior, from the harness that executes, though products often call both the harness.

Why it matters to a revenue leader

The harness decides what the model sees and when work counts as finished, so the model name alone says little about how a product will perform. Anthropic found that one model can post quite different scores on a coding benchmark depending on the scaffolding around it. It also found that a frontier model running in a simple loop fell short of building a production-quality app from a one-line request, and addressed it with harness changes such as a full feature list and a progress file. For a revenue leader, the harness is where control lives, including which records an agent may change and when it must hand back to a person.

A PE-backed environmental services company tries two AI tools that run on the same model to prepare renewal summaries. The first reads only the agreement record and stops after one draft. The second also pulls service history and open work orders, checks its draft against the agreement terms and flags gaps for the account manager. Account managers trust the second tool's output, and the difference comes from the harness.
